Round the Mountain sends a wooden train clicking along a mountain track while everyone plays on the same team. The goal is to collect sparkling gems and stay clear of falling rocks. A wooden die hidden under the train adds a tiny moment of surprise on every roll.

  • For 2 to 4 players, with 15-minute play
  • Wooden game board, train and die give it a sturdy feel
  • 20 gems and four mining cart collection cards to fill
  • Four falling rock tokens and a spinner add challenge
  • No reading, so preschoolers can play on their own or with family

How it plays at home

The train moves around the track and clicks as it goes. Peek under it to find out what color you rolled, then collect the matching gem. Falling rocks can slow things down, so the team has to think about who needs which color.

Because the visual cues are clear, preschoolers can handle the rules without much help. It also introduces color matching and turn-taking through a game that feels like a toy train set.

Great for All Ages

My kids had a lot of fun playing this game. It's nice that it's a cooperative game instead of trying to win against each other. The mining carts are double sided. One side has colors you specifically have to match with gems. The one side has white spots so you can put any color gem in it. My 6 and 9 year olds were able to figure out the game easily, while still having fun. The directions don't specifically mention putting the dice inside the train but it does say to lift the train to reveal the dice, so we figured that out. It's fun that the dice rotates under the train as you drive it. There's no reading involved, if you have a kid that struggles with that and there's not even really counting needed. It's a fun, simple but entertaining game that is well built with sturdy materials.

Very sturdy cooperative game, but purely chance based

My family is a big fan of the cooperative board games from Peaceable Kingdom. We also own Count Your Chickens and Hoot Owl Hoot. My kids are 2 and 4. My younger one is obsessed with trains and my older one loves gems and crystals, so this theme felt like an easy win for our house. Cooperative games work especially well at this age because no one feels sad about losing. When someone wins, we all win. The components are extremely sturdy. The board is made from very thick plywood, roughly half an inch, and the main piece is a solid wooden train. The built in dice rolling mechanism is clever. The die rolls inside a compartment in the train, which is helpful because little kids often struggle with throwing dice across the table. Both kids enjoy playing it. That said, I do not find it very engaging as an adult. Unlike Hoot Owl Hoot, which has some simple strategy, this game has no strategy at all. It is entirely based on chance, which I found a bit disappointing. Still, it is clearly popular with the target age range in our house, and I expect we will be playing it often.

Great beginner game with sturdy pieces

This is a really cute and well-made game. The wooden pieces are a big plus—they hold up much better than cardboard, especially with little hands that can be a bit rough. It’s a great option for kids who are just learning how to play games since it’s simple and doesn’t require reading. That makes it easy to jump right in and start playing. There are quite a few small pieces, so it definitely earns the 3+ rating. A well-supervised 2-year-old could probably enjoy it too, but you’d want to keep a close eye. I got this for my grandson who loves trains, and it was a great fit for him.
