Based on the old folktale, Stone Soup asks everyone at the table to chip in on one big pot. Players flip cards, remember where the ingredients hide and race the fading fire. If the soup gets made, the whole table wins together.

  • Seats 2 to 6 children, so it fits a small family or a small group
  • 24 soup cards, one magical stone card and 10 fire-out cards drive the memory challenge
  • A game board and a story with instructions set up the folktale before play
  • Rounds run roughly 15 to 20 minutes
  • Pictures only, so early readers and pre-readers join in equally

How it plays at home

Cards are laid out face down and players take turns flipping them, hoping to match ingredients for the pot. Whenever luck turns against the group, a fire-out card creeps the flame closer to going out. Everyone has to remember what has been revealed, so talking it through out loud becomes part of the strategy.

It works nicely as a first memory game because the table is on one side. Try telling the Stone Soup story before the first round; kids tend to get invested in the soup and forget about winning.
