Mancala has always been a game for two, but this wooden board makes room for the whole family. You scoop stones from a pit, drop one in each pit as you go, and try to finish with the fullest mancala. The rules cover games for two, three and four players.

How it plays at home

The basic motion is simple enough for young children: pick up every stone from one pit and sow them one at a time around the board. Land well and you capture stones or earn another turn, so counting ahead becomes the quiet skill of the game. The player with the most stones in their mancala at the end wins.

Because the board folds shut, it goes easily to a cabin, a grandparent's house or a long afternoon at the park. The spare stones are handy for the inevitable one that rolls under the couch. Tip: start new players on the two-player rules, then switch to three or four once the sowing motion feels natural.
