Rock Paper Switch borrows the capture-and-position feel of chess and layers on the hand game everybody learned on the playground. Pieces beat each other by the old rock, paper, scissors rule, so you have to think about who can take whom. Then the switch tiles show up and rearrange your plans.

  • Seats 2 to 4 players, so it works as a duel or a table game
  • Capturing follows rock-paper-scissors logic instead of chess rank
  • Switch tiles can reverse a situation in a single turn
  • Exercises planning ahead and improvising when plans fall apart
  • Recommended for ages 8 and up, with rules billed as easy to pick up

How it plays at home

Because everyone already knows rock beats scissors, the rules sink in fast. The strategy comes from lining up your pieces so that the right one is always facing the right opponent. A well-timed switch tile can turn a losing position into a winning one, which keeps the player who is behind in the game.

It suits kids who are ready to move past luck-only games and families who want something with a little chess flavor but less intimidation. The product data is short on details like play time and piece counts, so treat it as a strategy night game rather than a quick filler. Tip: let newer players practice the matchups for a few minutes before the first real game.

Rock, Paper, Scissors Meets Chess

I bought this game for my 9 year old twin grandsons. They recently learned chess and I thought this would be a fun spin on the game. Each player has 5 rock pieces, 5 paper pieces and 5 scissor pieces. Each type of piece can move a certain way (paper is like a rook in chess, scissors are like bishops, rock is like a King but can move up to 3 spaces per turn). Paper can only capture rock, rock can only capture scissors and scissors can only capture paper. The last person to have at least one of each piece still on the board wins. The strategy comes in figuring out which piece can move where while keeping in mind what it can capture and being wary of what can capture it. The game can be played with 2, 3 or 4 players. We all loved the game and found it to be a really great brain exercise. I think it helps to have a little familiarity with chess because it reinforces the concept of certain pieces making certain moves. I very strongly recommend this fantastic game!!

SO fun!

This is such a fun game to play with the kids. Similar rules to the old fashion rock paper scissors. The kids love this game and we never seem to get sick of it. I like to watch the kids take their time and try to plan out a thoughtful strategy. It’s a great game to get everyone thinking!

Fun game!

I wasn't sure what to expect on this one. It's fun and once you learn the rules of movement it's very strategic. The cool thing was that you didn't know who was going to win. You could appear to be ahead, then the tables turn quickly. We played with a 5 year old and while she didn't understand the strategy, she still had fun moving pieces. It's a great family game!

Interesting new twist on chess and rock paper scissors.

Took a while to understand how to play this correctly. Once we figured it out though, it was really fun game to play and challenging. I wish the pieces were hard plastic or a hard of material instead of flexible pieces.

Easy to learn. Takes thought to win

This is an easy game to learn and play and a great way to start teaching your children about strategy. It’s a bit like chess but with less pieces. I play with my 6 year old daughter and also with my 75 year old dad. We are a family that loves games and this is a great one to add to your collection.

Great gift for a boardgame kid

This was a Christmas present pick for us. We got this for my 8 year old nephew as we think that it's a good match for him and as he gets older. I like the concept of combining rock paper and scissors but turning it into a board game that can be played for a longer amount of time with multiple players. It's a nice introduction into strategy for chess/checkers. We haven't played the game yet but excited to try it out.
