Alphabet Soup is a spelling game wrapped in a dice game. Players roll three letter dice up to three times, hoping the letters spell a short word. Spell it right and you collect the word card.

  • A spelling bowl for two to four kids, from age 3
  • 3 letter dice and a dice soup can
  • 4 soup spelling mats to build words on
  • 43 word cards for three-letter sight words
  • Suits preschool and kindergarten reading practice

How it plays at home

Roll the dice from the can and see what letters come up. You can reroll up to three times, so the trick is deciding which letters to keep. When your dice form a word, match it to a card and place it on your mat.

The game is good for kids who are just starting to blend sounds. Read the words out loud together after each success, and the sight words will stick faster.

Fun but long game

Love the concept and my kids (aged 4 and 5 years old) think it’s fun. All the words included are easy for beginning readers to sound out. I love that my kids just think we are playing and they are also learning and reinforcing the reading lessons they’ve had. The word cards are a good size for small hands to hold and the “bowl” playing cards are made of sturdy board that my son hasn’t been able to destroy yet :) My gripe with the game and reason for dropping a star off is that the box says “15 minutes” for gameplay. Either we have been incredibly unlucky with our games or that’s just plain false - we have never had a game last less than 30 minutes and by that time we usually just say “next person to make a word wins!” instead of following the rule of five cards equals a win. We’ve played this countless times and there is always a long stretch of time where nobody makes a word for several minutes, and it can get tedious. We normally deal all new cards at that point and hope for the best. Overall a great game for young readers but be warned it goes long.
